Rachel is a unique blend of grounded confidence, reserved outspokenness and modern traditionalism. Her Eritrean culture is embedded into her daily life through her playing of the kirar, an East African instrument, and the morning coffee ritual she shares with her mother. At the same time, she is deeply involved in her present community. By mentoring students at the Boys & Girls Club, an organization that provided support in her own childhood, she is able to spread the awareness that differences can unite and passion can drive change. Rachel will continue to blend her heritage and personal identity as she studies neurobiology at UCLA.
