To say that Korral Taylor is committed to her community is an understatement. As a high school student she used her strength and leadership to advocate as President of the San Diego Youth Action Board, delegate to the San Diego Mayor’s Youth Commission, member on the Encanto Youth Advisory Board, and President of the Lincoln High Youth Health Council. Following in the hopes and dreams of two of her favorite leaders, Dr. Martin Luther King and Medgar Evans, in addition to seeking to make her community stronger, Korral chose to address issues at her school. And it wasn’t easy. She pushed past her fears and became a public speaker, coordinated the first Wellness Series, and advocated for a language class at Lincoln High School. You better believe they now have French in their curriculum! Her passion and commitment are reflected in her own words, “The negative things that define my community – the drugs, the gangs and the violence – do not define who I am.” This inner strength and belief in oneself reflect the characteristics that make us certain Korral will always be a strong voice for the lives of at-risk youth.
Words I live by:
“I’m for truth, no matter who tells it. I’m for justice, no matter who it is for or against. I’m a human being, first and foremost, and as such I’m for whoever and whatever benefits humanity as a whole.” – Malcom X
