Giselle Valdez

giselle-valdez

High School: Academy of Our Lady of Peace
College: Columbia University

To Giselle, dreaming is not merely thinking of unattainable ideals, rather it is the setting up of new heights to achieve, new stars to reach. For Giselle, using her authentic poise and confidence to challenge limits only for her was not enough. A true community leader, Giselle took her unwavering belief in the dignity of individuals, particularly young girls, and created a non-profit organization to help them realize their own power. Through Women Inspiring Girls to Soar, Giselle and the 15 peers she empowered to join her, mentor at-risk 5th and 6th grade girls by engaging in activities that draw awareness to positive body image, healthy habits, effective communication and the value of education. Giselle’s inspiration for and founding of this organization shows wisdom well beyond her years. Through this program, Giselle is addressing root causes of injustice by showing at-risk girls that they can be the solution. In doing so, she is already making a positive impact on the goal of equalizing access to education that she aims to pursue at Columbia University.
