Is there a doctor in the school? Guatam Soundararajan would certainly come close to answering yes to that question. As one of Prescribing Hope’s youngest volunteers, Guatam would travel monthly to the village of Jacume, Mexico and assist in the medical clinic. Although he couldn’t treat the patients, Guatam would assist the doctors by taking patients’ blood pressure, pulse, and other vital signs. He also helped by soliciting medical supplies from donor doctors and was able to secure an electrocardiogram, examination tables, and blood centrifuges. But Guatam’s contributions don’t stop there. He has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Care Development Organization in Nepal, and was a student intern researcher at The Scripps Research Institute. To find balance in his life, Gautam played violin in the school orchestra and was on the tennis team. Now at Dartmouth University, Guatam is majoring in economics and mathematics, but for this San Diegan one of his biggest college highlights so far was the campus-wide snowball fight. Looks like he’s got the balance just right!
