Alexa’s enthusiasm for life and her spunky adventure-driven attitude conceal the adversity she faces daily. Despite the challenges of living with her medical condition, Alexa refuses to let epilepsy dictate her life. Quite the contrary. Although she is unable to drive a vehicle, she somehow found a way to serve food to the homeless on Crack Alley in San Diego every week. She also worked with Invisible Children, a horse program for handicapped children and a crisis pregnancy center. For Alexa, volunteering isn’t something she feels she “should” do, it’s a lifestyle and has been since she was very young! Mix in the ‘normal’ activities of a high-achieving teen — running track, co-captaining the cheerleading squad, and serving in the school student government – and Alexa’s schedule would tire anyone out. Yet she keeps pushing forward and is determined to work in the nursing field despite knowing that her medical condition will make it difficult for her to gain entry. But given Alexa’s strength and determination, we have no doubt this goal will become reality. Because of her health, Alexa stayed close to home and started the year at San Diego State University but always longed to spread her wings. She recently transferred to Liberty University in Virginia and as you might expect… she is soaring!
